The English Premier League (EPL) has seen some of the greatest strikers in football history, players who have scored unforgettable goals and led their teams to glory. This article ranks the top 10 Premier League strikers based on their performances, appearances, and goal-scoring efficiency.

Alan Shearer is one of the best strikers of all time in the Premier League era. He is the highest scorer in Premier League history. Shearer scored 260 goals in 441 appearances for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. His formidable strike-partnership with Chris Sutton famously fired Blackburn to the 1994/95 Premier League title.

Shearer bagged the Premier League Golden Boot, with 34 goals in a 42-match campaign, and won Premier League Player of the Season. Mohamed Salah previously held the 38-game record, until Erling Haaland arrived in England, and shattered the record books with his lethal finishing.

SportsBoom has compiled the most comprehensive list of the best strikers in Premier League history, and a breakdown of the 2023/24 EPL scoring charts. We highlight their goals, assists, matches played, and minutes per goal statistics, and crown the best striker leading to Christmas in the 2024/25 campaign.

The Top 10 Goal Scorers in English Premier League History

Alan Shearer is a Newcastle legend. He famously turned down Manchester United for his hometown club in 1996. Shearer still holds several goalscoring records. The statistics, however, indicate that several strikers are (or were) better overall players. Harry Kane, Sergio Agüero, and Thierry Henry have better statistical records in assists and goals per minute ratios. Shearer was a superb striker, but he was not versatile like the others on the all-time Premier League scoring charts.

Mohamed Salah is breaking records on a weekly basis at Liverpool; his numbers are insane. He will go down as one of the greatest African players to play in the Premier League. He is already a Liverpool great. Of the top 55 goal scorers in EPL history, Salah is the only out-and-out winger.

He sits eighth on the charts (172). He is only three goals behind Henry, five behind Frank Lampard, and 15 behind Andy Cole, in fourth place. If the Egyptian signs a new contract at Anfield, he will pass Herry Kane (213) and move into second all-time on the scoring charts, within two seasons. Lampard, like Salah, was also not a centre forward. He was a prolific attacking midfielder, who played centrally.

The other eight players were strikers or centre forwards, who sometimes played wide or as a second striker. Lampard’s goals and assists compare with great players from any league from around the world. Wayne Rooney is the most versatile player on this list. Rooney played several positions at Manchester United, and like Salah, worked tirelessly tracking back on defence.

Henry is the most decorated player on the list. Visionary manager Arsene Wenger turned Henry from a wide forward into one of the best strikers in the world. He is one of only two FIFA World Cup winners inside the top 100 Premier League scorers of all-time. Former Arsenal teammate Robert Pires is the other; however, Pires sits at 85 on the EPL scoring charts. Henry (4) is also the only top 10 scorer to win league titles in two or more European leagues.

Erling Haaland is the best centre forward in the Premier League. He has had an incredible two-and-a-half seasons at Manchester City. He has won two titles, while top-scoring in both completed seasons. Haaland is unrivalled in the 18-yard area, but he is limited in every other area of the game. Despite his scoring feats, he is not as good any the 10 best strikers in Premier League history.

10. Jermaine Defoe | England | Goals: 162 | Clubs: 5

Jermaine Defoe scored 162 goals for five English Premier League clubs during his 24-year career. He never won a league title in the English top flight. He did, however, win a Scottish Premiership with Rangers in 2020/21.

The only major trophy Defoe won in England was the English Football League Cup with Tottenham Hotspur in 2007/08. The striker was voted Tottenham’s Player of the Year in 2004. Defoe played 57 times for England, scoring 20 goals.

9. Robbie Fowler | England | Goals: 163 | Clubs: 4

Robbie Fowler, affectionately known as ‘God’ at Anfield, was one of the pre-emanate Premier League strikers and a Liverpool fans’ favourite in the 1990s and early 2000s. Fowler is sixth on the all-time Liverpool goal scoring charts.

Fowler played for four EPL teams in his 17-year top-flight English football career. He scored nine hat-tricks, the third-most in EPL history. Despite never winning a league title, Fowler won two Football League Cups (1995, 2001), the 2001 FA Cup.

The former Liverpool number nine also won two European trophies (2001 UEFA Cup and 2001 UEFA Super Cup) and was part of Liverpool’s unique treble-winning cup team in 2001. Fowler never won the EPL Golden Boot, but he claimed the 1999 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Golden Boot, scoring seven goals in eight games.

8. Mohamed Salah | Egypt | Goals: 170 | Clubs: 2 | EPL Titles: 1

Mohamed Salah has been the best Premier League striker since he returned in 2017. He has terrorised defenders, scoring more goals than any other player in that time. He has won a string of individual and team awards. The ‘Egyptian King’ was named Premier League Player of the Season after winning the Golden Boot in 2017/18.

Salah set a new EPL goalscoring record, netting 32 times in 36 matches during a 38-game campaign. He edged former Liverpool striker Luis Suárez, who scored 31 goals in 33 matches in 2013/14. Both times, however, the Reds did not win the league title. He has won the EPL golden Boot three times (2017/18, 2018/19, 2021/22).

Salah has won every English domestic trophy, including the 2019/20 Premier League. He scored in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League final versus Tottenham Hotspur to lead  Liverpool to a sixth European Cup. Salah added the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup to the cabinet.

Salah won back-to-back AFCON African Footballer of the Year awards in 2017 and 2018. He top-scored for Egypt during the 2016/17 FIFA World Cup qualifying, five goals in five games. The Reds flyer won the FIFA Puskás Award for his dazzling goal against Everton in the Merseyside derby in 2017/18. Salah has 58 goals in 101 matches for Egypt and is his country’s second-highest scorer in history.

7. Thierry Henry | France | Goals: 175 | Clubs: 1 | EPL Titles: 2

Thierry Henry is widely regarded by players, pundits, and fans as one of the greatest players in Premier League history. The Frenchman achieved everything in football. He won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000 with France. Henry won titles in England, Spain, France and the United States.

He was a Ballon d’Or runner up in 2003, and he also finished third in 2006 Golden Ball, while in North London. He won two Premier League Player of the Season awards in 2003/04 and 2005/06. Henry scored what was once voted the best Premier League goal ever against Manchester United in October 2000 - the goal still makes the top 10 list.

He won two Premier League titles, including top-scoring in Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003/04. The Gunners striker won four Premier League Golden Boots in five seasons, including three in a row (2003/04, 2004/05, 2005/06). He also won back-to-back European Golden Shoes in 2003/04 and 2004/05.

6. Frank Lampard | England | Goals: 177 | Clubs: 3 | EPL Titles: 3

Frank Lampard is a Chelsea legend, and the club’s all-time top-scorer. The former Blues midfielder won three Premier League titles in his 14-year career at Stamford Bridge, including four League Cups and three FA Cups. He was part of Chelsea’s historic first UEFA Champions League (2011/12) and Europa League (2012/13) triumphs.

He is one of four players to play more than 600 EPL matches (609) and is sixth all-time in the goalscoring charts with 177 goals. Lampard was voted Premier League Player of the Season in 2004/05. He scored 29 times for England in 106 matches.

5. Sergio Agüero | Argentina | Goals: 184 | Clubs: 1 | EPL Titles: 5

Sergio Agüero is forever immortalised in Premier League folklore for his last-gasp title-winning goal for Manchester City in 2011/12. Martin Tyler’s iconic commentary will live long in the memory of every EPL supporter (except Manchester United fans) as City clinched their first league title in 43 years, with the final kick of a pulsating match against Queens Park Rangers.

Also known as Kun Agüero, the South American striker holds the record for the most Premier League hat-tricks (12), one more than Alan Shearer. Agüero won five league titles, including one Golden Boot in 2014/15, scoring 26 goals in 33 games. He added six EFL Cups and the 2018/19 FA Cup to his English domestic medal haul. The South American is City’s record goal scorer, netting 260 goals in 390 matches.

The former Argentina striker is a 2008 Olympic Gold Medal winner and 2021 Copa América champion. He began his career with two FIFA U-20 World Cup titles in 2005 and 2007, and never looked back. Agüero netted 41 goals in 101 international matches for La Albiceleste to cement himself as one of the best strikers in Argentina’s history

4. Andy Cole| England | Goals: 187 | Clubs: 6 | EPL Titles: 5

Andy Cole won five Premier League titles at Manchester United. He is a one-time EPL Golden Boot winner, scoring 34 goals in 40 games for Newcastle United in 1993/94. He added 13 assists to his tally, something Alan Shearer matched the following season for Blackburn Rovers. Shearer, however, played all 42 games, two more than Cole.

Cole was part of United’s treble-winning season in 1998/99. United clinched the EPL title on the last day of the season when they came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Old Trafford. David Beckham levelled the scores before halftime. Cole sealed the title, two minutes after the break.

The following week, United went on to beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the 1999 FA Cup final. The Red Devils then claimed their second Champions League title when they came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the dying minutes of a sensational ending to the final at the Camp Nou. Cole did not have a prosperous England career. He played 15 internationals, scoring once in seven years.

3. Wayne Rooney| England | Goals: 208 | Clubs: 2 | EPL Titles: 5

Wayne Rooney is not only one of the best Premier League strikers, but he is also an all-time England great. He burst on the scene for Everton, scoring a sensational goal against Arsenal, aged 16, in October 2002. A move to Manchester United saw Rooney win five EPL titles, including every domestic, European, and world trophy on offer. He won the 2008/09 Champions League, the 2016/17 Europa League, and the World Club Cup in 2008.

Rooney won the Golden Boy award in 2004 after a sensational domestic and international season. He starred at EURO 2004. He was voted the 2009/10 EPL Player of the Season, stepping up to be the main man after Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid. Rooney is United’s all-time top scorer, racking up 253 goals in 559 matches, with 183 coming in the league.

Rooney also has a string of great goals. He scored from the near halfway line against West Ham United in March 2014. Rooney’s most memorable goal, however, was his audacious overhead bicycle kick in the Manchester Derby in February 2012 (another Martin Tyler classic commentary moment).

2. Harry Kane| England | Goals: 213 | Clubs: 1 |

Despite never winning a Premier League title, Harry Kane is arguably the best (out-and-out) striker in EPL history. Had Kane not moved to Bayern Munich, he would have passed Alan Shearer’s scoring record. Kane won the Golden Boot three times at Tottenham Hotspur, but he never won a trophy.

Kane is Tottenham and England’s all-time record goalscorer. He scored 280 goals in 435 games for Spurs, and 69 goals in 103 international appearances. Kane won the 2018 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, scoring six goals in Russia.

He was awarded the inaugural Gerd Müller Trophy as the best striker in the world in 2024. He top-scored in Germany, the Champions League, and the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Kane also claimed the 2023/24 European Golden Shoe.

1. Alan Shearer | England | Goals: 260 | Clubs: 2 | EPL Titles: 1

Alan Shearer is the all-time top goal scorer in Premier League history. He scored 260 goals for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United during his 14-year Premier League career. Although he was not as gifted a player as many on the other top 10 scoring players, Shearer was one of the most clinical centre forwards of his era.

The former England captain is fifth on the all-time the English goalscoring charts. Shearer bagged 283 goals in top-flight English football. Shearer scored five hat-tricks in the 1995/96 season, which is still the record for one campaign. Furthermore, this incredible feat was achieved in the first 38-game EPL season. Shearer has eleven trebles, one fewer than Sergio Agüero (12).

He famously won the 1994/95 Premier League title, Premier League Golden Boot, and Premier League Player of the Season with Blackburn Rovers, his only championship. He won the Golden Boot in three successive campaigns between 1994/95 and 1996/97. Thierry Henry is the only other player to win three Golden Boots in a row.

Shearer netted 30 times in 63 games for England. He won the UEFA Euro ’96 Golden Boot, scoring five goals in six matches before England lost in the semi-final to Germany at Wembley Stadium. There is a statue of Shearer outside St. James’ Park in honour of his greatness and loyalty to his boyhood club.

Who is the current best striker in the Premier League?

Mohamed Salah is currently the best striker in the Premier League. He is breaking records every week. Salah has scored more goals than any player in the Premier League since he joined Liverpool in 2017. He was the top scorer in the Premier League at Christmas in 2024. The Egyptian scored 15 goals, with 11 assists in 16 games. Erling Haaland was second, with 13 goals and one assist in 17 games.

Salah became the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals and assists before Christmas. This is also the sixth time the Reds’ flyer has scored double-digit goals and assists in a campaign, beating Wayne Rooney’s (5) previous record. Salah (38) also overtook Rooney’s (36) same game goal and assist in a EPL match record in 2024. The right winger did it in 214 games fewer than Rooney.

Salah is level with David Beckham (80) in tenth for all-time assists in EPL history, making him the only player ever to feature in the top 10 for goals and assists in England’s top flight. Two goals against Tottenham in December 2024 saw the Salah go fourth all-time highest scorer in Liverpool history (229).

The Top Goal Scorers in the 2023/24 Premier League Season

The best striker in the 2023/24 Premier League season was Erling Haaland. The Manchester City frontman has laid waste to defences across Europe. Haaland shattered records as City won a continental treble in his debut season. The Norwegian won back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot awards and the 2022/23 European Golden Shoe.

The City striker won the Premier League Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season award in his first year in England. The following season, Haaland top-scored again, with 27 goals in 31 games as City won a fourth successive title.

Haaland (98) had the most shots out of the top 10 scorers, but his goal conversion (28%) and shot accuracy (60%) percentages were middle of the road compared to the other strikers. Phil Foden (75%) had the best shot accuracy percentage, Dominik Solanke (55%) had the lowest.

Mohamed Salah (20%) had the lowest goal conversion percentage; Jean-Philippe Mateta (41%) had the best. Cole Palmer netted 22 times in 34 matches, adding 11 assists, six more than Haaland. Palmer’s goal conversion (29%) and shot accuracy (61%) percentage was better than Haaland.

Alexander Isak, the only other player to reach 20 goals, had a better goals-to-minute ratio than Palmer. Isak played four games fewer than Palmer but only scored one goal fewer. Moreover, Isak had the best goal conversion (33%) and shot accuracy (67%) percentage, better than Haaland and Palmer.

Foden won Premier League Player of the Season despite not being the best football player at City. Rodri should have won the award; instead, he won the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Salah’s numbers were low because he spent a month at the African Cup of Nations, which derailed Liverpool’s title challenge.

The Egyptian left for AFCON in early January as the second-highest scorer in the league, but a hamstring injury halted his scoring run. Salah scored a goal every 141 minutes to finish as the seventh-best striker, one behind Isak in third.

Bukayo Saka of Arsenal celebrates after scoring the team's second goal

Bukayo Saka//Getty Images

Son Heung-min scored 17 goals in 35 games, with 10 assists. Son stepped up in Harry Kane’s absence, scoring seven more goals than in the 2022/23 campaign. Bukayo Saka tied ninth with Jarrod Bowen and Mateta on 16 goals. Saka is the one of the best young players in the world. He has spearheaded Arsenal’s two title-challenges with 30 league goals in the last two seasons and won a string of individual awards.

Saka improved his strike-rate, scoring two more goals in three fewer games than 2022/23. The England flyer registered nine assists, which is more than Haaland, Isak, Foden, Solanke, Bowen, and Mateta. The youngster is a star in the making, but he has a long way to go to be anywhere near Salah’s class.
