For two seasons, Ghanaian midfield maestro Mohammed Kudus has been lighting up the Premier League with his technical brilliance, versatility, and clutch performances.
Since making the switch from Ajax to West Ham, Kudus has cemented his place as one of the club’s standout players, earning admiration from fans and pundits alike.
As West Ham navigates a transitional period under a new coach, Kudus remains a key figure in the squad, carrying the expectations of both club supporters and a growing fanbase in Ghana.
In this exclusive interview, he opens up about his journey so far, his mindset, and what the future holds.
The Ups and Downs
When asked about his development over his first two seasons at West Ham, Kudus was quick to reflect on the lessons he has learned both on and off the pitch.
"A lot, actually. First, getting here was a great feeling because I’ve always wanted to play in the league. Finally getting here, the next goal is to actually make an impact in the league. Throughout the process, I’ve learned that it’s never going to be a smooth road," Kudus told SportsBoom.com.
"There are ups and downs, but you still have to show up with a smile on your face, work hard, and try to improve every single day because I really believe in my abilities. Yeah, that’s something no one can take from me."
His belief in himself has been evident in his performances, where he has continued to step up in crucial moments for the Hammers.
West Ham’s Mentality
With a new coach at the helm, West Ham is undergoing a transition, but Kudus insists the core mentality of the team remains the same.
"I think the mentality is still the same. We all want to win, be higher up in the league, and challenge the top.
"Yeah, it’s a new coach and a new way of playing, but the passion, resilience, focus, and energy are always the same. It’s about finding ways to get the three points."
The Story Behind the Iconic Stool Celebration
One of Kudus’ most talked about trademarks is his unique celebration; sitting on a stool after scoring. The gesture has sparked plenty of conversation, but the meaning behind it runs deep.
"As you know, I used to borrow the one from the stewards, and then I thought of an idea about where I'm from."
"Having that stool reminds me of growing up and seeing the queens and the kings sitting on it. The stool is from Ghana. The chiefs sit on it, so it's very special; it shows authority and kingship."
"So I thought, why not do something different? And as you notice, there’s a lot of people sitting on the board now and a lot of conversation about it, so when I bring my stool out now, this is mine, and nobody can do it."
Carrying Ghana on His Shoulders
For Kudus, the love from his home country is something that fuels him every time he steps onto the pitch. The growing Ghanaian fanbase supporting West Ham because of him is a source of pride, but also a responsibility.
"The love and support I receive from Ghana is immense, and it means a lot to me. It shows that I’m doing something right and that there are a lot of people looking up to me."
"I try my best to set examples and do my best in every situation. Even though we are human and still make mistakes, not everything is going to be perfect for the kids coming up."
"It’s a nice feeling to know that I have all that support from Ghana. It does come with pressure because everyone’s looking up to you and watching you during games to come up with some magic, but it’s a pressure I have to deal with, and I’m built for it."
What’s Next for Kudus?
With his stock rising, Kudus has been linked with several top clubs. But does he see himself staying at West Ham long-term, or is a move on the horizon?
For now, the Ghanaian playmaker remains focused on the present.
"I’m just here to play my football, enjoy myself, and help the team as much as I can. The future will take care of itself."
As West Ham continues its season, Kudus will undoubtedly remain a key figure; both for the club and for the passionate supporters who continue to follow his journey from Ghana to the global stage.
