EXCLUSIVE: Former defender Joe Jacobson says Wycombe Wanderers have chance to write history this season
Former Wycombe Wanderers captain Joe Jacobson believes the current squad has the potential to make history in League One. He reflects on the club's past successes and expresses his support for their promotion bid under new management. Jacobson sees a change in the team's playing style and praises the recruitment under the new ownership. He believes they have a top six squad and hopes for continued success throughout the season.
Former Wycombe Wanderers captain Joe Jacobson believes the club’s record breakers have the chance to write history this season.
The Chairboys are flying high at the top of League One and have won 11 games in all competitions for the first time since becoming a Football League club.
Jacobson was part of the famous squad, under hallowed boss Gareth Ainsworth, who got promoted to the Championship for the only time in the club’s existence in 2020.
“It’s been an amazing start to the season for Wycombe, it’s quite incredible really,” Jacobson told SportsBoom.com in an exclusive interview.
“I want them to do well, I want them to get promoted, like I do with all of my old teams. I had my time. What we did under Gareth is completely different to what they’re doing now.”
“I want my friends to succeed. I was friends with the manager for a long time as much as he was my manager and also a team-mate as well.”
“I want success for the club. The fans there are great. I went to an ex players dinner recently so I still have a big affiliation with the club.”
“What we did in the past, getting promoted to the Championship, or the early 2000s with the early cup runs the club had, those guys will always be heroes.”
“People will look back at that history, but that’s done now. But these guys have the chance to make their own history. I’m as big a fan as anyone else for it.”
JACOBSON BACKING WYCOMBE FOR PROMOTION
Jacobson spent a memorable decade-long spell at Adams Park, which included the 2017-18 League Two promotion as well as the culmination of a long journey to the second tier two years later.
The Welsh defender hung up his boots at the end of last season after his 400th and final appearance for the club — a fitting farewell for a Chairboys legend.
And he can already see the stark difference between last season and how boss Matt Bloomfield has the side set up for their title tilt this term.
“I was down at the club recently actually,” added Jacobson. “Obviously I still talk to a lot of the players, Matt Bloomfield who i’ve spent a lot of time with over the years. I also wanted to meet the new guys in charge there, the new ownership group."
“It’s a club that became my home. It was the team from now every time the weekend comes along they’re the first team I look out for."
“It’s been incredible what they’ve done. They’ve changed their style of play. The manager thought he needed to cement down the style."
“Last season, whilst I was still there, we tried things, when they didn’t work we tried something else."
“He said ‘right this is the way we’re going to do things’ and believed in it. It’s been amazing the results they’re getting."
“They’ve got a great squad there. They recruited really well in the summer with the new ownership there. Things are a lot more data driven and identifying players they see for the future and future player trading as well."
“The club’s in a really good place. I looked at the squad and think there’s a top six squad there now. They deserve to be right up there and hopefully it continues throughout the season.”
