Kian Spence is determined to rack up the points as quickly as possible to ensure Barrow are not dragged into a relegation dogfight.

The battling Bluebirds overhauled the form book to stun promotion-chasing Notts County 2-1 on Tuesday night to end a painful six-month wait for an away win.

It was a performance which thoroughly deserved a first victory on the road for 15 games in all competitions.

Boss Andy Whing, who enjoyed his first away scalp since taking charge in January, hailed his players as “outstanding” as they propelled themselves 11 points clear of the trapdoor to non-league football.

And midfield maestro Spence, who scored the opener, told SportsBoom.com: “You want to enjoy your football. The manager, since he’s come in has said he wants us to have smiles on faces.”

“You enjoy football when you win football matches. No-one enjoys being towards the bottom of the table.”

“We want to get as many points as we can as quick as possible to make sure we’re not in that scrap.”

“We’re a together group who want to give the best for the club and we’re giving our best each week.”

“I feel like any three points you get when you’re in the lower half of the table takes the pressure off you, especially after a couple of defeats in a row in our case.”

“Any win on the board is a massive weight off our shoulders, but we need to back that up to make sure we’re not under pressure again.”

“We’ve got good players. We’ve come on the wrong side of tight results a lot this season.”

“I don’t think our league position shows the quality that we do have in the team.”

“That’s not an excuse. We need to be more consistent, put in performances over 90 minutes to get results.”

SPENCE THRILLED TO BOUNCE BACK

The Bluebirds suffered huge disappointment last week when they lost the highly-anticipated Cumbrian derby to neighbours Carlisle United, who sit bottom of the Football League.

But they immediately bounced back to end their three-game losing run at Stuart Maynard’s promotion-seeking Magpies.

And Spence added: “It was one of the worst days of the season for us. Especially with it being a derby and where we are at the minute.”

“We put everything into it, but didn’t get a result. To put that right straightaway was massive for us.”

“We pride ourselves on being good at home, but our away form this season has been nowhere near good enough. You need to do well away to take a bit of pressure of when you are playing at home.”

“To get a result at one of the toughest places in the league is a real positive.”

“We know we haven’t won many games away from home this season and haven’t won a lot this season as a whole.”

“We’ve gone ahead and not held on. To concede a goal straightaway after our second goal it was a real credit to us to hang on.”

Barrow are back in action when they host 21st placed Accrington Stanley at the weekend.
