Messi started playing football as a boy and in 1995 joined the youth team of Newell's Old Boys. Newell’s Old Boys are an Argentine sports club based in Rosario, Santa Fe.
Lionel Messi then joined Spanish giants FC Barcelona’s academy La Masia at the age of 13 after he and his family relocated to Spain from Argentina. Interestingly, Lionel Messi’s first contract with the Blaugrana giants was signed on a napkin. The same napkin was sold for nearly $1 million during an auction in 2024.
He achieved immense success at the club, his first for the club was assisted by the legendary Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho. It can be said that Messi was always destined for greatness. Messi helped the club to four UEFA Champions League triumphs, multiple league titles and cups, while also many other European titles.
Messi's exit from FC Barcelona in 2021 still remains a very controversial and emotional topic for fans. But the Argentine star can say that he achieved everything at the club as he still is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer (672 goals), all-time top appearance maker (778 appearances).
He joined Ligue 1 side PSG on a free transfer in the 2021 summer transfer window. He won two Ligue 1 titles and one French Super Cup during his time with the club. He later joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami in 2023. He was instantly made the club captain and helped the club clinch their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup in 2023.
The only thing missing from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s trophy cabinet was an international trophy. Messi helped his side win the 2021 Copa America trophy and has never looked back ever since. In 2022, he fulfilled his destiny by lifting the FIFA World Cup with Argentina. He has since won the Finalissima trophy in 2022 and another Copa America title in 2024. He also has an Olympic gold medal to his name (Beijing 2008).
