Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest football players of all time. He’s one of the best forwards in football history, scoring the most international goals. He has won nearly every trophy the sport has to offer. He is only missing the FIFA World Cup. Ronaldo has four  Guinness Book of World Records

What Guinness Book of World Records Did Ronaldo Break?

There are many reasons why Lionel Messi is better than Ronaldo. However, CR7’s celebrity is unmatched on social media. SportsBoom is interested in all sorts of records, not only sports statistics. What Guinness Book of World Records did Ronaldo break? SportsBoom has compiled a list of some of the Guinness Book of World Records that Ronaldo has.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best striker in football history. He was awarded the Guinness Book of World Records certificate for scoring the most goals in international football (901). He became the highest-scoring international footballer when he notched goal number 111 for Portugal against the Republic of Ireland in September 2021.

Ronaldo has 132 goals in 214 international matches (as of 20/09/2024). He has said he wants to keep playing. CR7 has scored 897 senior goals. He scored four times for Portugal's under-20 (1) and under-21 (3), but these strikes do not count, no matter what the media says. He has not yet reached 900 senior goals for club and country, but he’s bound to do so in the coming weeks.

The Guinness Book of Records recognized Ronaldo as the highest international goal-scorer between 2003 and 2021. He is one of the best forwards in history. Ronaldo posed with the certificate to verify his unique goal-scoring achievement on an Instagram post on social media. He has recently become the most followed sportsman of all time on social media.

His Instagram page hit 639 million followers. The former Real Madrid forward has 170 million followers on Facebook and 113 million followers on X (formally – and still - known as Twitter). Ronaldo’s YouTube channel became the fastest to reach one million subscribers. The social media page now has more than 60 million subscribers.

The Highest Scorer in International Football History

Cristiano Ronaldo is a goal machine. Even though Lionel Messi is regarded as the greatest footballer of all time, Ronaldo has outscored Messi in some competitions. The Portugal captain owns some interesting football records. Although Guinness Book of Records certified Ronaldo’s 900th goal, SportsBoom asserts that his age group goals do not count.

Ronaldo has won more UEFA Champions League titles. He has scored more hat-tricks and free kicks than Messi. CR7 has scored more UEFA European Championship goals than any other player. But Messi has won the FIFA World Cup and two CONMEBOL Copa América titles since 2021. The rivalry between the two, and their supporters, is bigger than some international and club football rivalries

Ronaldo has other notable world record achievements. He has more international caps (214) than any player in the game’s history. He was the first player to score more than one hundred UEFA Champions League goals. Ronaldo has played more Champions League matches, and scored more goals than any other player, including Messi. He is a certified ‘GOAT’ of the game, with or without a Guinness Book of Records certificate.

Although Ronaldo has been credited with scoring his nine hundredth goal during the first international break of the 2024/25 season, the statisticians miscalculated. Ronaldo needs three more senior goals to become the first football player to reach the landmark.

CR7 is credited with reaching his 900th goal in Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Croatia in September 2024. But, as mentioned above, he still needs three more strikes to attain this incredible achievement. Ronaldo still needs three strikes to reach his world-record tally, but he should with ease. If he plays another few years, he will reach one thousand goals.

Lionel Messi Book of Records

Lionel Messi is without a doubt the ‘GOAT’ of football. It is not close. He has scored the most goals in La Liga. The Argentinian notched 474 goals at Barcelona. Ronaldo scored with 311 goals. Messi struck 50 goals in a single La Liga season in 2011/12, and Ronaldo’s highest league tally was 48 in 2014/15.

Messi has the most assists in football history, and it’s not surprising that he topped La Liga with 21 during the 2019/20 campaign. His total Spanish assists is 193. Ronaldo only has 88 assists. Even though CR7 has the most hat-tricks in history, Messi edges him in La Liga with 36, two more than Ronaldo in 2019.

The former Barcelona playmaker has the record for consecutive games scored in La Liga by an individual. Messi was on the scoresheet twenty-one times in 2012/13. He is the only player to score 20 or more goals in consecutive La Liga seasons thirteen times. Messi edged Ronaldo in Pichichi Trophies, winning eight. He also won six European ‘Golden Shoe’ awards; Ronaldo won four.

The main reason Messi is considered the ‘GOAT’ in football is because he has eight Ballon d’Or awards to Ronaldo’s five 'Golden Shoes'. The South American won two 'FIFA ‘Golden Ball’ awards in 2014 and 2022, including a 2022 ‘Silver Boot’. Ronaldo does have a UEFA ‘Golden Boot’ and ‘Silver Boot’ award to go with his UEFA Nations League Finals ‘Golden Boot’ and ‘Goal of the Tournament’.

Messi has two Copa América ‘Golden Balls’ and a ‘Golden Boot’ in the trophy cabinet. Messi will more than likely reach 900 goals, but he will struggle to overtake Ronaldo’s massive tally of strikes. One thing is for certain: football will never see their like again.
