Who is the Most Expensive Football Player in the World?
Erling Haaland is the deadliest striker in the world. Mohamed Salah is the best winger in football. Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne are the best defensive and attacking midfielders in the world. But who are the most expensive football players?
Who is the Most Expensive Football Player in the World?
Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 made the Brazilian the most expensive football player in the world. Often a controversial figure due to his on-field antics, Neymar’s transfer sent shockwaves throughout football. The excessive £198m deal put Chaos Theory to the test. With the flap of a wing, Neymar’s deal triggered a tsunami around the globe.
Transfer fees shot through the roof, not only for superstar players and young talent. Now, ordinary professionals were being sold for inflated prices, especially in the English Premier League. Because of the money in England’s top-flight division, traditionally weaker clubs held richer clubs to ransom for players.
The ‘English Tax’ referred to higher fees for talented English players between Premier League clubs. Chelsea Football Club is notorious for over-spending and breaking English transfer fee records. Still, the London club took fees to a new level when they began over-paying for unproven players.
The Moisés Caicedo deal, among many others, including World Cup winner Enzo Fernández, has seen clubs get fleeced by their rivals no matter the calibre of player. Caicedo and Fernández are two sides of the same coin. Their transfer fees prove money does not always buy success. SportsBoom has compiled a list of the top 10 most expensive football players in the world and a list of the most valuable football players in 2024.

The Most Expensive Transfers in Football History
There is an obscene amount of money flying around in professional sports, none more so than association football. Billions of pounds/dollars in TV deals, sponsorships, commercial deals, image rights, and state-owned clubs have turned football into an endless money pit for players, managers, agents, and anyone who can milk the sport for every penny.
Neymar’s transfer kickstarted an inflated spending spree. Barcelona lost their superstar Brazilian, so they needed to replace him with another Samba player. The Catalan club targeted Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho. The diminutive Brazilian forced a transfer through feigned injuries, while his agent pushed an agenda in the media.
Liverpool, who had lost star striker Luis Suárez to Barcelona through the same tactics, made the Spanish giants pay the third-highest fee in football history. The Merseyside club used their money wisely. They paid record English Premier League fees for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Both excelled, winning every trophy on offer. Coutinho’s career tanked.
Kylian Mbappé, an up-and-coming yet unproven talent, signed for PSG the year after Neymar. The young French player came at a cost for PSG, who shelled out the second-highest fee in history. It was money well spent. Mbappé won everything in France except the UEFA Champions League. He is also the highest-paid player in the Champions League in 2024. Mbappé moved to Real Madrid for free after his contract expired at PSG in 2024.
Chelsea has paid three of the top 10 highest transfer fees and many more not far off this list. Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, and Romelu Lukaku were all signed for around one hundred million pounds. Fernández has not produced his Argentina World Cup and Copa América-winning form. Caicedo has flattered to deceive. He did not perform well in his first season, but he has shown glimpses of his Brighton & Hove Albion form. Lukaku had the wrong managers at Chelsea. He spent four loan spells away from London during his two stints for the Blues. He never justified his price-tag.
João Félix is another player to flop after a record-breaking transfer fee from Benfica to Atlético de Madrid in 2019. Félix found himself on loan soon after signing, before ending up at Chelsea (surprise). He has made an adequate start to life in London. However, Chelsea signed more players than any club in history, so games will be at a premium unless he brings his Benfica promise to the fore.
Antoine Griezmann is another expensive flop. The Frenchman is one of the most underrated players of his generation. He won multiple trophies at Atlético Madrid, but his time in Catalonia was terrible. He was eventually loaned back to Atlético after a couple of seasons before re-signing full-time.
Jack Grealish and Declan Rice (both £100m) have been value for money. Grealish was the most expensive British football player when he moved from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2023. But Rice signed with Arsenal for the same fee in 2023. However, performance related add-ons make Rice the most expensive English football player. Grealish won multiple trophies with City.
Although he lost his starting place in 2023, the former Villa playmaker proved a successful signing. Rice has also exceeded expectations at Arsenal. He has been the engine that has driven them close in two EPL title challenges. Rice is spearheading another title challenge, proving his value and worth to the Gunners.

The Most Valuable Football Players in the World in 2024
Erling Haaland is the most valuable football player in the world according to Transfermarkt. The trusted and respected online football moderators, data scouts and analysts released an updated version of the most valuable football XI in the world based on a 4-2-3-1, the most-played formation globally.
It must be mentioned that ‘most valuable’ is different from ‘best’ or ‘greatest’ player/s in 2024. These values represent age, form, and most importantly, the length and details of the contract at their current club. Haaland is the best striker in the world. However, Phil Foden, Rodri, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are better all-around players. Mo Salah, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Kevin de Bruyne, and Virgil van Dijk are a few examples of a player’s ‘value’ not equalling ‘quality’.
It’s no surprise that Real Madrid and Manchester City players make up the eleven. Madrid is the best team in La Liga and the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League holders. City is the best team in England. Pep Guardiola’s side has won four successive English Premier League titles. Liverpool, Arsenal, and Porto are also represented with a player from each club.
Interestingly, when Transfermarkt changes formation to the popular attacking 4-3-3 formation, Florian Wirtz (£109m) moves into the left of the midfield three. The Bayer Leverkusen playmaker replaces Federico Valverde. Jude Bellingham plays on the right, and Rodri – valued at the same price – is the holding midfielder.
