Everton are monitoring Tyrese Campbell’s progress at Sheffield United, SportsBoom sources can reveal.
Officials acting on behalf of David Moyes’ side dispatched scouts to watch the centre-forward in action against Coventry City last week, witnessing him help The Blades take another huge step towards sealing an immediate return to the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over the visitors from Warwickshire.
Campbell, who only moved to Bramall Lane eight months ago, has proved a huge hit for Chris Wilder’s men and netted his 10th goal of the season against Frank Lampard’s side.
If Moyes and his director of football Kevin Thelwell do decide to green light a move for the 25-year-old, it could see him join the club his late father Kevin represented 164 times before joining West Bromwich Albion two decades ago.
Despite arriving on a free transfer, Campbell has proven to be a particularly astute signing for Wilder having also netted during November’s triumph over Sheffield Wednesday in the first Steel City derby of the season.
With United well-placed to secure promotion - as they currently lead the Championship table, two points ahead of their nearest challengers Leeds and Burnley - their manager and new owners, a US based consortium entitled COH Sports, will be loath to accept any offers for Campbell irrespective of the potential financial returns.
BLOSSOMED IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE
But news of Everton’s interest, which has been exclusively confirmed to SportsBoom by sources in the North West, underlines how a player whose contract was allowed to run down by Stoke has blossomed in South Yorkshire.
Campbell, who is tied to United until 2027 at least, is understood to be happy at United and not looking to cash-in on his rich vein of form by engineering a move elsewhere.
However, the bright lights of the Premier League could prove too big a temptation to turn down, with the opportunity to follow in his father Kevin's footsteps.
Having started his career as a member of Manchester City’s development programme - Campbell chose to turn professional at the bet365 Stadium instead after a tribunal set his value then at £1.75m.
Before establishing himself in Staffordshire, Campbell also completed a spell on loan at Shrewsbury Town and has been capped by England at under-17 and under-20 level.
Everton are also preparing to lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who they acquired from United, at the end of the campaign.
