Promoted Burnley are keen to tie talismanic midfielder Josh Brownhill to a new deal, SportsBoom sources can confirm.

The 29-year-old playmaker has been a driving force in the Clarets return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

But his current deal expires in June this year and it is understood Clarets boss Scott Parker is hungry to get a new deal sorted ahead of the ambitious Lancashire club’s return to the top flight.

Brownhill netted a brilliant brace in a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Easter Bank Holiday Monday as Burnley secured their return to the big time with two games to spare.

And the central midfielder has weighed in with 16 goals in a season to savour with the Clarets having quickly dispelled the disappointment of relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.

Brownhill has been a mainstay of the side this term with 42 appearances and has scored seven goals in his last 11 games to help the Clarets finish the season in the style.

CAN CLARETS BE CROWNED CHAMPIONS?

They now want to be crowned champions, but know they must likely win both of their remaining fixtures, away against QPR on Saturday, then at home to Millwall on the last day of the season the following Saturday if they are going to leapfrog rivals Leeds United in top spot.

Leeds have a much superior goal difference than Burnley and know victories over Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle in their last two games respectively won crown them champions.

Brownhill is currently enjoying his sixth season at Turf Moor having joined the club in January 2020 from Bristol City.

He has since gone on to play 209 times for the club during that period, which has now included a memorable second promotion.

The former Preston North End player enjoyed three seasons in the Premier League with the Clarets before the club were relegated to the second tier in the 2021-22 season.

Promotion back to the Premier League followed before immediate relegation – and then promotion again with Brownhill one of the club’s most consistent performers in recent years.
