Tournament Preview

There is a certain level of prestige added to The Genesis Invitational and it is one of the eight Signature Events in the PGA Tour calendar. These have limited fields and include a raft of PGA Tour winners from the previous calendar year, as well as the top 50 players from the 2024 FedEx Cup Points list.

There will be a normal cut after Friday’s play (36 holes) to the top 50 and ties plus any players within 10 shots of the lead.

The South Course at Torrey Pines has undulating greens, ranking high on the Stimpmeter (9.5 feet), so players will need to take care with their putts as it can be tricky to get a good read.

Matsuyama, who won the 2025 season opener at the Sentry, is the Genesis Invitational reigning champion. Currently, fifth in the world golf rankings, a victory could see him move up a spot or two as there are 700 points awarded to those who step into the winner’s circle.

Contender News

For any golf tournament preview, it’s always worth taking a look at some of the main contenders.

Scottie Scheffler

Despite missing more than a month of the PGA Tour with a hand injury sustained during the Christmas period, Scottie Scheffler is settling back into things nicely. Strong with the flatstick, Scheffler who enjoyed a terrific 2024 with seven wins, was T9 at AT&T Pebble Beach.

It looked like he was going to spring a late charge at the Phoenix Open last weekend, but he carded a 72 on the Sunday (one-over-par) which ultimately killed his chances. However, finishing T25 is nothing to be scoffed at, and he is likely to be a serious contender at The Genesis Invitational.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy had more than his fair share of misses in 2024, including finishing runner-up at the US Open. His focus was on the DP World Tour at the start of the campaign playing in the Middle East, but on his first PGA Tour appearance this year at the AT&T Pebble Beach, the Ulsterman was superb. In shooting a total score of -21, he finished two shots ahead of close friend Shane Lowry to pick up a 27th PGA Tour career title which is staggering.

McIlroy has had some issues over the past season with his putter, but the flight he can get from the tee gives him a distinct advantage over most the field. After taking a quick breather last weekend, he should be feeling fresh and raring to go this week. The golf betting odds available at the top sportsbooks never discount McIlroy either!

Justin Thomas

The pre-tournament betting odds don’t seem to be overinflated for Justin Thomas. A T6 at the Phoenix Open was underlined with a stunning approach at the 18th where he holed out for an eagle.

In his previous five visits to the Genesis Invitational, Thomas has finished in the Top 10 on three occasions. He’s averaged a score of -14 which is very respectable, and he has also averaged 302 yards off the tee which should hold him in good stead.

Suggested Bets

Scottie Scheffler to win the Genesis Invitational: Scheffler could well be the highest-placed American in the field. A formidable presence, Scheffler is now one of the most feared players in the circuit and he has the same kind of aura that Tiger Woods was in his pomp. Interestingly, Woods was poised to play his first official event in seven months, however, he pulled out just a few days before the tournament following the death of his mother. From what we have seen over the past year, Scheffler will be there or thereabouts, but it would be a brave decision to overlook him. (15/4 with Stake)

Sepp Straka has caught my eye so far this season, and he appears to be a model of consistency. The Austrian hasn’t left too many putts short, and he could well hit his stride in Round 1. In his past five opening rounds, he’s averaged 67 which is solid, and he could well end Thursday atop the leaderboard. (4/1 with 1xBet)

Going into overtime isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. There have been 18 playoffs, with the most recent being in 2021 when Max Homa defeated Tony Finau. Unlike last weekend where Thomas Detry strolled to a seven-stroke victory, one of our golf betting tips this week is for the event to be decided via a playoff. (100/30 with Betway)

Tournament Prediction

Each tournament on the PGA Tour this term has had a different winner. The variety of champions is something that should be celebrated, particularly because of the unpredictability attached to an individual competition. The Genesis Invitational is one of those special events on the circuit and the cream usually rises to the top.

In this case, we like the look of Thomas who has had some decent results at this event in the past, including a string of top-10s. Although Scheffler and McIlroy could run him close, Thomas has picked up some big wins in his career, including the PGA Championship and the Players Championship. His form is picking up at just the right time, and we think he is primed to end his barren spell and enter the winner’s circle this weekend.
