The Ultimate Fighting Championship has been blessed with hundreds of exciting fights and finishes over the past three decades. Some MMA fans prefer all-out slugfests that go the distance, while others prefer to see quick knockouts or submission wins. Either way, the fights still deliver us fans jaw-dropping moments.
While it's quite common, especially at heavyweight, for fights to end fast via knockout, forcing your opponent to tap quickly isn't as straight forward.
Firstly, you must secure a takedown or dominant clinch possession, which takes time in itself. And then you must transition into the submission and then apply enough squeeze or torque to the technique. Which is why these fighters, in the table below, deserve huge praise.
In this article, we have ranked the ten fastest submissions in UFC history.
Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira holds the record for the most submission wins in UFC history with 16. He also holds the records for most finishes and bonuses in the UFC.
Methodology
The rankings presented are based solely on the official submission times recorded in UFC bouts. Each submission is evaluated purely on its swiftness, with data sourced from reputable MMA records and statistics.

In a highly anticipated bout on February 28, 2015, Ronda Rousey defended her bantamweight title against Cat Zingano. Zingano charged forward at the opening bell, but Rousey was not fazed and she quickly used her excellent Judo skills, transitioned into an armbar, and secured the win in just 14 seconds, marking one of the fastest submissions in a UFC title fight.
3. Marcus Aurelio vs. Ryan Roberts (UFC Fight Night)

4. Terry Etim vs. Edward Faaloloto (UFC 138)
British lightweight Terry Etim wasted no time at UFC 138, securing a 17-second guillotine choke against Edward Faaloloto in front of his home crowd in Birmingham, England.

5. Chas Skelly vs. Maximo Blanco (UFC Fight Night 94)
Chas Skelly set a featherweight division record with his 19-second rear-naked choke victory over Maximo Blanco.

6. Dennis Hallman vs. Matt Hughes (UFC 29)
Long before Matt Hughes became a UFC Hall of Famer, he suffered a 20-second loss to Dennis Hallman at UFC 29. Hallman’s slick transition into an armbar was a shocking display of grappling efficiency, handing Hughes one of the quickest defeats of his storied career.
Losing to Hallman via submission is certainly no embarrassment. Hallman had an unbelievably long career, winning 41 of his 76 pro MMA bouts by submission.
7. Roman Mitichyan vs. Dorian Price (TUF Season 6)
The Ultimate Fighter has seen many quick finishes, and Roman Mitichyan delivered one of the fastest with a 23-second armbar against Dorian Price. Mitichyan’s jiu-jitsu expertise was on full display as he wasted no time in locking up the submission.

SportsBoom Suggests
Oleg Taktarov's 9 second submission of Anthony Macias remains the fastest in UFC history, even after 30 years, and it may never be beaten. Compared to the early 2000s and late 90s, the average fighter has improved tremendously in terms of submission defence and grappling knowledge, which is why it would be unlikely for someone to beat this.
Ronda Rousey’s submission of Cat Zingano is the second-most recent fight on this list, and even that was 10 years ago, highlighting the above point that submission defence has gotten so much better in recent times.
Dennis Hallman’s submission ability is one of the most legendary things we have seen inside the octagon. For most fighters, it's difficult to even reach over double digit submission wins, but he has more than 40. His submission over Matt Hughes is arguably his greatest win because of the quick timing of the win, and also because of the high level fighter Hughes was.
