This will be the second game in a span of three days between the Spurs and Mavericks, coincidentally, both being played in San Antonio. The San Antonio Spurs have been competitive despite facing a challenging period, after the confirmation of the absence of both long-time head coach, Gregg Popovich, and franchise player, Victor Wembanyama, for the rest of the season. The Spurs organization have rallied together, but seems resigned to the fate that this year they will be a lottery team. They are 13th place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 25-34.

On the other hand, the Dallas Mavericks are trying to steady their ship after tumultuous end to the trade deadline that saw their franchise player and bonified league superstar, Luka Dončić, being dealt away to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange of All-NBA two-way center Anthony Davis and other assets. Fans in Dallas are still in shock at that development and protests and wide outrage have been a regular occurrence around their home arena and practice facility. The Mavericks are in 10th position on the standings with a 32-29 record to show for it.

San Antonio Spurs: Current Form – LWLLL

  • Overall Record: 25-34
  • Home Record: 14-14
  • Away Record: 10-19

The season held so much promise for the San Antonio Spurs but things have shifted for the worst. After being one of the most exciting and entertaining outfits in the association, the injury bug hit them and dealt a blow to their iconic head coach Gregg Popovich and superstar Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs had recently acquired clutch superstar point guard De'Aaron Fox to pair him up with Victor, in what promised to be a masterstroke move, with hopes of making noise in the playoffs. However, fans will have to wait until next season to see this unique and dynamic duo play together after the recent developments.

The Spurs future is for sure bright and with the organization, having made its name by constructing dynasties across the decades, despite being in a small market. Chris Paul has been an awesome veteran leader, while Devin Vassell is blossoming into a solid offensive threat. Rookie Stephon Castle has been tremendous and Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan and Harrison Barnes have been valuable contributors to the team.

The Spurs will have to be on their A-game if they are to end their six-game losing streak against their bitter rivals the Mavericks.

Key Players to Watch

  • De'Aaron Fox: De'Aaron Fox is a bona fide star in the NBA. For years, he has been putting up great numbers and the trend has continued in San Antonio. Fox is averaging 19.7 points per game with the Spurs through 12 games and 23.9 points per game for the season.
  • Chris Paul: Chris Paul has done a remarkable job, offering leadership and mentorship to the young Spurs core. Although his production has waned over the years, the “point god” is still capable of dictating play much to the detriment of his opponents.
  • Devin Vassell: Devin Vassell has developed into a potent scorer for the Spurs. With Victor’s injury, he is expected to carry some of the scoring burden alongside Fox. This season, Vassell is averaging 15.4 points per game.

San Antonio Spurs Team News

The Spurs will be without Victor Wembanyama and Riley Minix who will both miss the remainder of the season. Charles Bassey will also miss this contest after suffering a knee injury.

Dallas Mavericks: Current Form - LWLLL

  • Overall Record: 32-29
  • Home Record: 19-12
  • Away Record: 13-17

The Dallas Mavericks haven’t lived up to the billing so far this season, with a 32-29 record that sees them sit on tenth place in the Western Conference standings.

Much was expected from the team after making it to the NBA Finals last season, coupled up with one of the best offseason roster shakeups. However, to say things haven’t gone to plan would be an understatement. The front office, led by general manger Nico Harrison, chose to cut ties with their franchise superstar Luka Dončić in a trade deal that sent shockwaves across the league. As it stands, the Lakers won the deal since it has catapulted them to second place in the Western Conference standings.

Injuries have wrecked the team and derailed their performance in games. On paper, the Mavericks still boast one of the most impressive staring units capable of dominating on both ends of the floor. Anthony Davis is still out with an adductor strain and his return is greatly anticipated. In his absence, superstar point guard Kyrie Irving has held the fort albeit to mixed results.

The Mavericks are still outside the automatic playoff places, but a play in spot is within their grasp. Once healthy, this team will be a matchup nightmare for all the teams in the league as they have every arsenal in their armory to dominate on both ends of the floor.

Key Players to Watch

  • Kyrie Irving: Kyrie Irving is one of the best point guards in the NBA. When on form, he is virtually unguardable. Irving has a deep skillet and an array of moves in his bag that can’t be matched by anyone in the history of the game. Although he has been hampered by injuries this season, Irving has averaged 25.0 points per game.
  • Klay Thompson: Klay Thompson has struggled in some games this season. However, let that not deceive that he is washed up.  Klay is still one of the best shooters in the NBA. This season he is averaging 14.0 points per game.
  • Max Christie: Max Christie has settled in pretty nicely in his new surroundings, after being acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers as part of the Luka trade. Christie brings balance to the Mavericks backcourt with his elite defense and marksmanship from the 3-point line.

Dallas Mavericks Team News

Anthony Davis is expected to miss the game, along with fellow centers, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, who are out due to a Grade 3 right MCL sprain and a right ankle stress fracture respectively.

Caleb Martin is also an absentee due to a hip injury as well as P.J. Washington who suffered an ankle injury.

Predicted Lineups

San Antonio Spurs Lineup

  • Point Guard: Chris Paul
  • Shooting Guard: De'Aaron Fox
  • Small Forward: Devin Vassell
  • Power Forward: Harrison Barnes
  • Center: Bismack Biyombo

Dallas Mavericks Lineup

  • Point Guard: Kyrie Irving
  • Shooting Guard: Max Christie
  • Small Forward: Klay Thompson
  • Power Forward: Naji Marshall
  • Center: Dwight Powell

Value Bets

  1. De’Aaron Fox to Score Over 20 points – After Victor Wembanyama’s injury, much of the San Antonio‘s offensive output will be shouldered on De’Aaron Fox, who will be looking to outshine his opponents. Therefore, his scoring game is expected to be on the high end.

  2. Kyrie to Score Over 22 Points – With all the injuries grappling the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie will be the main offensive anchor. He will focus on scoring as much points possible to keep his team on the dominant spot.

Prediction: Dallas Mavericks to Win

San Antonio have resigned to the fate of a lottery team. Moreover, Dallas are looking to secure a spot in the playoffs, hence they will be looking to outshine their opponents in this game as this will move them a step closer to their aspirations.
