Lakers vs Clippers

Lakers vs Clippers//Getty Images

The battle for Los Angeles is once again upon us, as the noisy neighbours the LA Clippers welcome cross-town rivals, the LA Lakers, to their new home court in Inglewood. The hosts are certainly looking to assert their early-season dominance. The Clippers are having a decent season after relocating from the Crypto.com Arena, which was their fierce rival’s home court, and never quite felt like home. After many had projected the Clippers to suffer following their offseason roster shake-up, the shock is on them as the team has rallied to solidify 6th position on the Western Conference standings. The Clippers will be a post-season incubus for many teams.

On the other hand, the Lakers seem like a team reborn, after solidifying their hold on the 5th position in the West. The Lakers have claimed two massive victories over their fierce rivals, the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors, in recent weeks and the performances have been dominant, to say the least. Despite LeBron James and Anthony Davis calling the front office to bring additional pieces that would aid their pursuit of the NBA title, the team has evolved into a defensive nightmare for opponents in recent games. This has solidified the confidence of Lakers fans, particularly those who enjoy online betting.

Los Angeles Clippers: Current Form – LWWLL

  • Overall Record: 26-20
  • Home Record: 17-8
  • Away Record: 9-11

The Los Angeles Clippers have overturned the expectations of a majority this season. They held their fort as Kawhi Leonard rehabilitated his nagging knee injuries and relied on team basketball which has worked wonders for their chemistry.

Their movement into the Intuit Dome is another massive advantage. The team finally has a home court of their own after years of being referred to as the “basement team” for being hosted at the Crypto.com Arena, which is the home of their fierce rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers. They are slowly turning the state-of-the-art venue into a fortress, as they seek to build a franchise capable of challenging for the NBA Title.

With Paul George struggling with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Clippers seem to have dodged a bullet with their decision not to offer “PG” a max contract, proving to be a masterstroke. James Haden has rolled back the years with impressive performances. On the other hand, Norman Powell has upped his scoring production since becoming a starter after years of being a sixth man and is in contention for an All-Star selection. Ivica Zubac is playing lights out and bench production has greatly increased, with various role players taking turns and making remarkable contributions on a nightly basis.

Head Coach Tyronn Lue can finally call upon his superstar, two-way small forward Kawhi Leonard, who has returned from injury. Notably, he is being eased into the lineup with a clear emphasis on having him fully healthy and available in the postseason.

The Clippers are one of the teams expected to pull a surprise and acquire assets before the 6th February trade deadline.

This matchup against the Lakers is one for the ages as both franchises are jostled together on the log and have their big guns ready to go.

Los AngelesKey Players to Watch Clippers

  • James Harden: James Harden has turned back the clock this season. ‘The Beard’ may have lost a step due to his age, but he still offers potent ‘isolation’ scoring and elite playmaking. Harden is averaging 21.7 points per game and 8.3 assists. If the Clippers are to make the playoffs, Harden needs to continue this production.
  • Norman Powell: Norman Powell has been a stud so far this season. He leads the team in scoring 23.9 points per game. Powell’s clutch gene has been on showcase during certain games in the season and despite the West being home to some elite guards, he is sure to challenge for a first All-Star appearance.
  • Kawhi Leonard: Kawhi Leonard is finally back on the court after spending months on the sidelines. Leonard is among the best players in the league and will be very vital to the Clippers’ title charge. Kawhi has been efficient since his return despite being limited to 22.4 minutes per game and he will see his production surge upwards as he gets acclimatized to his teammates.

Los Angeles Clippers Team News

Jordan Miller is recovering from an illness, Kris Dunn is out with a knee injury and Cam Christie is battling an ankle injury.

Los Angeles Lakers: Current Form – WWWWL

  • Overall Record: 26-18
  • Home Record: 16-6
  • Away Record: 10-12

The Los Angeles Lakers are having a relatively good season so far. They are fifth on the log and have moved eight games over 500 for the first time this season.

The Lakers have already bolstered their roster via the trade market this season with the additions of Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, who are sufficiently equipped in perimeter shooting and defence. However, with disgruntling from their Head Coach JJ Redick and the superstar duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, expect some activity before the trade deadline elapses.

High on their priority is a centre and a ball-playing guard to lead the second unit. JJ Redick’s fast-paced offense has begun to yield results and with key role players such as Jarred Vanderbilt returning to the fold, they are guaranteed to pose matchup challenges to opposing teams.

LeBron James continues to defy father-time with ageless performances every now and then and Anthony Davis is playing at an All-NBA level leading the team in points per game, rebounds, blocks and steals. Austin Reaves has settled as the starting point guard and secondary ball handler for the team.

With bragging rights on the line, the Lakers will be looking to avenge their loss from a couple of weeks ago and solidify their position atop the Pacific division which is among the most competitive in the NBA, considering they still have two games to play against the Clippers albeit on home court.

Key Players to Watch

  • LeBron James: LeBron James is still one of the best players in the NBA despite turning 40 years old in December. King James leads the Lakers in assists and can take over the game whenever he sees fit. Playing against the Clippers usually ignites his belly and he will be motivated to put on a virtuoso performance against one of his nemesis Kawhi Leonard.
  • Anthony Davis: Anthony Davis is playing at an MVP level this season. He is one of the most dominant big men in the NBA and a defensive monster. The “Brow” will have wreak havoc in the paint as evidenced by his recent showing against the Charlotte Hornets where he posted 42 points and 23 rebounds.
  • Austin Reaves: Austin Reaves has finally settled as the point guard after playing shooting guard since his rookie season. The White Mamba’s playmaking has vastly improved, and his defensive game continues to grow. Reaves is tasked with pacing the game, an element that is crucial in JJ Redick’s system.

Los Angeles Lakers News

Gabe Vincent suffered a knee injury while Rui Hachimura’s calf injury will be reevaluated before this contest. Jalen Hood-Schifino's strained left hamstring will be evaluated and Christian Wood is yet to make an appearance this season with no timeline confirmed, as he continues with his recovery from the left knee surgery he underwent in September.

Predicted Lineups

Los Angeles Clippers Lineup

Los Angeles Lakers Lineup

Suggested Bets

  1. Lakers to win: The Lakers are on an upward surge after their key role player back from injury. The teams’ rosters are evenly matched, with top-heavy talent at the head. However, the Lakers’ bench holds a slight advantage and their production will prove to be vital.

  2. Total Points – Over 220.5 points: These two teams have exhibited the ability to dispatch points in bulk and given that this will be a star-studded encounter, there will be scoring outbursts.

  3. LA Clippers to Cover Spread: This will be a closely contested affair, with both teams battling for the LA bragging rights. The point difference will be minimal, giving the Clippers a chance to cover the spread.

Value Bets

  1. Lebron James – Over 22.5 points: Lebron is doing what he knows best, which is scoring. Despite being in his 22nd season, he still catches up with his talent. Also, considering that this matchup is against one of his long-standing nemesis, Kahwi Leonard, he will be motivated to put up a vintage performance.

  2. Anthony Davis – 25 points and 10 rebounds: Davis is tired of all the disrespect attached to his name from failing to hit a mention in the top three Defensive Player of the Year contenders and MVP ranking. In this game, he will let his game do the talking.

  3. First Half – Clippers to Lead: While playing at home, Clippers have a tendency of taking an early lead and this game should be no exception.

Prediction: LA Lakers to Win

The Lakers are projected to take the victory away from the Clippers. Although the match will be in the Clippers’ backyard and is expected to be closely contested, the rivalry between these two teams will drive the Lakers to assume bragging rights for sweeping off their host’s glory.
