The Philadelphia 76ers will host the Miami Heat on home turf in their second meeting of four matchups this season. The 76ers are looking to even the regular season series at 1-1 apiece. The Philadelphia 76ers have been the most disappointing team in the NBA this season, considering they were among most fans and bookmakers’ favourites to lift the NBA Title, after an extraordinary roster shake-up in the previous offseason. They are a franchise experiencing internal turmoil and the ‘Process’ has lagged on for far too long. Superstar centre and former MVP Joel Embiid has failed to galvanize his team to contending status, with his absence creating deep chemistry issues within the entire organization. The 76ers are currently outside the play-in spot, let alone the automatic playoff places, as they are ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference with a lugubrious 17-27 record.

On the other hand, the Miami Heat have had their own mayhem to contend with. Two-way Superstar Jimmy Butler, who officially requested a trade from the organization, has exposed the organization in a bad light in the eyes of many fans. The franchise has been marred with unwarranted drama and bad publicity, over the handling of this issue and some of the fans are calling for the head of Miami Heat President Pat Riley. Despite all this, the Heat are still winning games and are placed sixth on the log, with a record of 23-22.

The games between these two teams are usually closely contested affairs, as they symbolize two hard-nosed cultures that pride themselves on hard work, grit and grind, akin to their fan bases.

Nothing could have prepared the Philadelphia 76ers for such a catastrophic season. They had been seen as one of the favourites to take home the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy in June, but things took a turn for the worse. Currently, they are battling for a play-in, playoff spot, as they sit in the 11th position in the Eastern Conference standings, with a gloomy 18-27 record.

Their franchise player and former MVP, Joel Embiid, has barely logged consistent minutes, with his decision not to play back-to-back games after returning from injury, which has garnered a lot of criticism from both fans and his teammates. The 76ers are pondering whether to shut down Embiid for the rest of the season due to his consistent injuries that have dented their chances of finally bringing the NBA championship back to the City of Brotherly Love.

The chemistry and morale of the team is at its worst. Players who were expected to be difference-makers seem lost and deprived of confidence. Elite two-way superstar Paul George has massively regressed after joining the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason. The 34-year-old is posting career lows in almost all of his stat lines and his guaranteed 4-year $211,584,940 contract seems to be one of the worst decisions in the franchise’s history.

Nick Nurse’s team have the potential to salvage their season, but injuries have continued to hover over the team. Philadelphia is quickly turning against one of its beloved franchises and the 76ers will have to play with heart if they are to turn the boos in their home court into cheers.

The 76ers have put together a decent three-game winning streak with the aim being in a playoff spot. They have the talent to cause massive problems to any of the conference’s leading pack in the postseason if they make it.

Key Players to Watch

  • Tyrese Maxey: Tyrese Maxey is the future of the 76ers. Maxey plays fearlessly. After beginning the season injured, Maxey has returned rejuvenated. His game has taken a massive leap and he is leading the team in points, assists and steals. Maxey is averaging 26.6 points per game, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals.
  • Kelly Oubre Jr.: Kelly Oubre Jr. is the biggest beneficiary of Jared McCain's season-ending knee injury. Oubre Jr. can be frustrating to watch at times but at least he provides solid numbers. He is popular for his lack of concentration and defensive solidity, although he can have streaky shooting episodes that result in easy points.
  • Eric Gordon: Eric Gordon is a solid veteran guard who can rain buckets in abundance while having a shooting clinic. With Paul George rehabilitating his finger injury, Gordon will be required to fill in his production in the starting lineup.

Philadelphia 76ers Team News

Joel Embiid may fail to suit up due to his swelling knee and fitness concerns while Paul George underwent an MRI, and it was determined that the 76ers’ star has an extensor tendon injury on his left fifth finger.

Jared McCain is ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his left knee. Caleb Martin will have his hip injury re-evaluated and may be an absentee for this game.

Andre Drummond may be sidelined after suffering discomfort in his toe while there is no clear timetable for KJ Martin’s return from his injury.

  • Overall Record: 23-22
  • Home Record: 12-9
  • Away Record: 11-13

The Miami Heat have steadied the ship despite being in turmoil for over two months. Superstar Jimmy Butler’s trade did not resonate well with the organization and more so with the Heat’s President Pat Riley, who has clashed publicly with the star forward.

Butler has been suspended indefinitely and it seems he has played his last game for the Heat. Head coach, Erik Spoelstra, has rallied the team to a decent record and ranking on the Eastern Conference standings. With the “Heat Culture” at play, a postseason berth is certainly attainable.

Bam Adebayo has transitioned smoothly to the role of a franchise player and will be crucial for the future of the team. Tyler Herro is a borderline All-Star candidate, and his play has been inspirational for the team, as he has filled in as the team’s second star.

Nikola Jovic is slowly developing into a potent stretch four and Duncan Robinson has become a consistent three-point assassin. Rookie centre Kel'el Ware has demonstrated glimpses of his scary defensive potential as Terry Rozier has become a reliable playmaker for the second unit.

With the 6th February trade deadline within reach, the Heat will be hopeful of acquiring solid pieces that could cement them as NBA title contenders while also finding a way to move the disgruntled Butler off the team.

Key Players to Watch

  • Bam Adebayo: Bam Adebayo is doing “Bam things” although his stat line fails to show his importance to the Heat. Bam is the heart and soul of the team as well as their defensive anchor. Bam’s tenacity, grit and determination are reflected in his dominance on the defensive side of the game. He leads the Heat in rebounds and steals.
  • Tyler Herro: Tyler Herro’s game has taken a significant leap this season. Herro is the team’s scoring and assists leader with 24.1 points per game to go along with 5.4 assists. He can scorch teams in an instant and has upped his scoring dominance over the recent weeks.
  • Kel'el Ware: Kel'el Ware is going to be a defensive monster in this league. The rookie centre has turned the Heat into a defensive behemoth. His integration has allowed Bam to play the power forward position where his footwork and switching ability has been maximized. Although Kel'el Ware is still learning, he leads the team in blocks with one per game.

Miami Heat Team News

Josh Richardson has been ruled out due to a niggling heel injury and Jaime Jaquez Jr. may return from illness after reevaluation. Dru Smith is out for the season after undergoing successful surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

  • Small Forward: Kelly Oubre Jr.
  • Power Forward: Justin Edwards
  • Center: Guerschon Yabusele

Suggested Bets

  1. Philadelphia 76ers to Win: If Embiid appears in the lineup and resumes from injury, Philly has a better chance of winning this game. Also, Maxey solidifies this choice, making it a probable outcome.

  2. Miami to Cover Spread: This is expected to be a tight contest; hence the Heat will make it competitive by seeking to control the paint. This implies that they could cover the spread.

  3. Under 218.5 Total Points: Miami has one of the slowest paces in the NBA, which they may unleash in this game to restrict the 76ers’ scoring volume. This is likely to hinder the game from being a high-scoring event.

Value Bets

  1. Tyrese Maxey – Over 25 points: Tyrese Maxey is the Sixer’s second-scoring option after Embiid. He makes high-volume shots and will be watching out for an open perimeter in this game.

  2. Bam Adebayo – Over 10.5 Rebounds: Bam is expected to dominate the boards and he will most likely intimidate the 76ers, who often give leeway to aggressive opponents.

  3. Kelly Oubre Jr. – Over 14.5 Points: Oubre has maintained commendable involvement in the offence this season. He stands out as a significant scorer for the 76ers and harvests points when any scoring opportunity comes up.

Prediction – Philadelphia 76ers to Win

Philly have multiple advantages that will most likely drive them to a win. They possess home court upper hand and if Embiid shows up, they will put up a dominant show. Not unless Miami’s star players put up a fight, the 76ers are bound to have an outright win.
