How is the season so far for both teams?

Minnesota Timberwolves

  • Record: 21-18
  • Home Form: 10-8
  • Road Form: 11-10

As the NBA season almost reaches its halfway point of the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves look set to be above .500 both on home turf and on the road for the first time in multiple months. The conference is compact and closely fought. Minnesota is the current eighth seed in the West but is in touching distance of the current third seed, the Grizzlies.

32-year-old Rudy Gobert has started all 39 games this season for the Timberwolves as their starting center. He is providing an average of 10.5 rebounds per game, placing him top ten within the NBA, but there is a notable regression compared to previous years in this department and in scoring efficiency too.

The Timberwolves’ leading star is 23-year-old Anthony Edwards. The 23-year-old is placed eighth in the entire league in the points-per-game standings and is improving as the season progresses. He is now posting 25.8 points per game and 4.2 assists per game. Edwards’ ceiling is still there to be achieved but he is improving on the other side of the court too, posting his second-highest of 5.7 rebounds per game.

Memphis Grizzlies

  • Record: 25-15
  • Home Form: 15-5
  • Road Form: 10-10

The Memphis Grizzlies are sitting in third place in the NBA Western Conference as the organization is closing in on the halfway phase of the season. Their current record is 25-15, with an impressive home form and are currently bang on .500 on the road. Their form has dwindled from their last ten games, meaning that the teams behind could get even closer due to the roster player one or two games more.

The Grizzlies are using their roster to good effect to try and stay healthy throughout the season, with no player posting higher than 30 minutes per game on average. Ja Morant picked up an injury earlier in the season, with the 25-year-old averaging 21.4 points per game and 7.3 assists. While these numbers don’t match previous years, he is still helping the organization’s continued upward trajectory up the league.

Improving year-on-year is Jaren Jackson Jr, with the 25-year-old the Grizzlies’ leading shooter with 22.8 points. This is the second year in a row that he has posted above 22 points per game, but a key difference is he’s improving in defensive situations and regaining possession on both sides of the court. His rebounds per game have gone from 5.5 to 6.4 in comparison to the previous year. He remains one of the best in the entire NBA as a free throw specialist, averaging 77.8% of shots.

Value Bets

  1. Jaren Jackson Jr: Over 25 Points

Jaren Jackson Jr was a key to victory against the Timberwolves in their last meeting earlier this January. He posted 33 points, a carbon copy performance from his previous game, and therefore we predict Jackson Jr to post at least 25 points. His career average is 18.4, but his recent form indicates there is a strong possibility of him being a standout performer once again for the roster.

  2. Anthony Edwards: Over 20 Points and Over 5 Assists

SportsBoom predicts Anthony Edwards to be of use once again for the Timberwolves. He only produced 15 points in their last encounter, but he will be sure to get one-over for this one. Across 16 games, he is averaging 21.9 points per game, so we are certain that Edwards will produce numbers aligned with our predicted stat line.

Prediction: Memphis Grizzlies to win

SportsBoom’s final prediction sees the Memphis Grizzlies coming out on top. The depth within the roster will be a huge help. The roster posts large numbers on multiple occasions this season and will win a second game in a row. The Timberwolves will force this into another close one, but the Grizzlies have one of the best records at their home ground all season, showing how much the organization like to put on a show for their fanbase.
