Exclusive: Jubilant Skipper Shaw Spent Two Days In Bed After Famous Mosconi Cup Triumph
Mosconi Cup-winning skipper Jayson Shaw celebrated Team Europe's victory over Team USA, only to black out in his hotel room. Recovering after two days in bed, Shaw reflected on his remarkable win as captain and MVP. Shaw led his team to an impressive fifth consecutive title with a dominant performance in the final day's competition.
Mosconi Cup-winning skipper Jayson Shaw has revealed he took an unfortunate turn for the worse after his memorable success in Florida.
The Scottish potter dazzled for Team Europe and inspired them to an impressive 11-6 victory over Team USA in this year’s prestigious tournament at the Caribe Royal in Orlando last week.
Seventh Mosconi Cup
But after becoming the first captain to win the Most Valuable Player Award and pocket an incredible SEVENTH Mosconi Cup crown, Shaw blacked out in his hotel room after feeling unwell.
Just a few hours earlier the 36-year-old Glaswegian had celebrated wildly with his four teammates, dancing on the tables as Team Europe claimed a commendable fifth successive Mosconi Cup title over their rivals.
Night to 'Remember'
“It was a bit strange to be honest, I just blacked out in my room about 1030pm,” Shaw told SportsBoom.com.
“It came out of nowhere, one minute I felt alright and the next minute I couldn’t stand up."
“We got back to the hotel for the after-party about 630pm, met up at the bar and I only had couple of beers and food."
“The party started about 8.30pm, but I was in my bed two hours later feeling really unwell, I was chucking my guts up."
“I was being sick all night, it was really strange because I don’t know what happened to me."
“I felt like something happened. I don’t know what, but it was so weird because I just didn’t feel myself."
“I spent a couple of days in bed, maybe it was by body shutting down after all the energy I put into winning into the tournament.”
Debut as Captain
Shaw pocketed his first Mosconi Cup title in 2017 and, since 2020, it has been Team Europe who have dominated the four-day event.
In 2020 Shaw won the MVP award for the first time, but winning the accolade as captain this time around was extra special.
“I’ve played in many Mosconi Cups, but to be the captain and to lead the team to victory – and the guys to play the way they did under that pressure – was just incredible,” added Shaw.
“The fans were absolutely insane. I’ve played in so many Mosconi Cups and the fans have been wild, but I’ve never experienced anything like that."
“It was a great experience, that was one of the best Mosconi Cups I’ve played."
“I buzz off the atmosphere, it’s all good fun. I grew up in that environment, playing in pubs with loads of drunk people watching, so the more the merrier to be honest.”
Team Europe held a healthy 9-5 lead going into the final day of competition – and that’s when Shaw made his experience and class count, whitewashing opposing captain Tyler Woodward 5-0 to fire his team to within one point of victory.
Eagle Eye added: “I went to bed pretty happy the night before with a 9-5 lead, so I slept really good and wasn’t worrying too much about the next day."
“I knew I was playing really well and I knew he was struggling a little bit – and I took advantage of that and beat him well."
“That was it, 5-0 up and we were on the hill. When we won we just got on the table and had a party, it was a great feeling, really special.”
