Luke Littler beware-your Warrington Wolves heroes are coming to get you!

And in Ben ‘Red Hot’ Currie, Wolves skipper George Williams believes the Betfred Super League outfit has a secret weapon ready to challenge the Nuke.

Well, maybe not just yet but last season’s Challenge Cup finalists are definitely brushing up their skills at the dartboard.

Williams and Co were delighted when the club announced it was naming its Halliwell Jones Stadium home ground, the Luke Littler Stadium for one game only against Catalans Dragons on February 21.

The 18-year-old world darts champion has been a boyhood Wire supporter and season ticket holder.

He watched from the stands well before is prowess at the oche shot him to super stardom.

“Luke is a massive Warrington fan and had been for a long time without anyone really knowing about him,” keen darter Williams told SportsBoom.com.

“He just used to be a Warrington fan; now he is a superstar of darts. So, this is good reward for him because after all he has brought darts alive in this country.”

When they are not training under the eyes of head coach, Sam Burgess, Warrington’s players turn their talents to practicing other sports.

“We have got a pool table, table tennis table and two dart boards,” said Williams at rugby league’s spectacular season launch at the Co-op Arena in Manchester last week.

“It makes you appreciate exactly how good Luke is when you try to do it yourself."

“The lads are competitive and think we are good at all sorts (of sports) but it’s not the case."

“Ben Currie is probably the best. He gets 180’s and is pretty impressive. Martin Gleeson (an assistant to Burgess) isn’t too bad either."

“But everyone is getting better because obviously we are on it. We have our own tournaments:101 or round the board. And it can get very competitive.”

However, the bullseye everyone connected with Warrington wants to hit is the elusive Grand Final victory.

Four times Wire have suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune at Old Trafford. Williams, then at Wigan, was on the winning side in 2016 and 2018.

ATTEMPT TO END WIGAN DOMINATION

BBC Sports Personality team of the year for 2024, Wigan have dominated the sport even more including last season’s Grand Slam.

But Williams doesn’t regret leaving for a stint in the NRL with Canberra Raiders or eventually swopping cherry and white for primrose and blue in 2021.

“I left Wigan satisfied with what I had achieved,” he confirmed. “When I left, I knew I had closed that chapter on my career."

“I was a Wigan boy, a Wigan fan and won Grand Finals with Wigan. It couldn’t have gone any better."

“With hindsight, they have gone on to be really successful. But I am not jealous."

“I just want to be back in those big games winning Grand finals for Warrington."

“We built some good foundations last year with Sam."

“We learned some vital lessons. We lost in cup final but  I think there were 11 lads who had never played in a final before."

“So, we have experienced that now. We are ready not to be the nearly team. The time is now hopefully.”
