America's stock in tennis is rising once again.

For most of the 20th century, the US was a dominant force in the sport, boasting numerous tournaments and as importantly, many of the biggest stars.

By comparison, the 21st century has been far less significant.

Currently, however, six Americans are in the top 10 positions of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) - four women and two men.

Could stars like Coco Gauff become the USA’s next Grand Slam winner?

Amid the backdrop of this American resurgence, SportsBoom looks at the greatest US tennis stars ever and who could possibly join their ranks.

How the Greatest US Tennis Stars Are Ranked

The definitive metric for a player's success in any sporting field is the number of titles and trophies they claimed.

Grand Slams also carry more weight as the highest level of the sport.

Therefore, SportsBoom has ranked the top American tennis stars of all-time by their successes at the highest level of the sport.

Pete Sampras

Pete Sampras is undoubtedly one of the greatest tennis singles stars of all-time.

He claimed his first Grand Slam at a record-setting 19 years of age and was also the #1 in men’s tennis for a record six successive seasons.

Sampras earned iconic status for his success at the majors.

Utilising a powerful serve and quick reflexes at the net, he won the US Open in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2002 (during his closing years as a professional).

Sampras also won the Australian Open in 1994 and 1997.

Although he also dominated Wimbledon in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, the American star never claimed the French Open title.

His best result at Roland Garros was the 1996 semi-final.

Pete Sampras trained under Robert Lansdorp and adopted his forehand technique and was later coached by Dr Peter Fischer, who helped him change to a single-handed backhand.

Andre Agassi

The American, who gained fame and notoriety in almost equal measure, completed his career Grand Slam at the French Open in 1999.

His success at Roland Garros capped off a remarkable tennis comeback.

Even without the last remaining Grand Slam, Andre Agassi entered rarified air with two US Open wins, four Australian Open titles, and a sole trophy at Wimbledon.

It’s no wonder he’s among the best in both US and worldwide tennis history.

Honourable mentions

A number of other American men’s tennis stars may not have reaped the same number of Grand Slam successes, but deserve their dues regardless.

Andy Roddick is a one-time US Open winner but still boasts an impressive singles win ratio of almost 75%, and was world #1 as recently as 2003.

While he might have gained infamy for his emotional outbursts and hot temper, the American dominated with blistering aces and baseline shots.

Likewise, Michael Chang only claimed a single Grand Slam at the 1989 French Open, yet his legacy in the sport marked him as a true trailblazer.

At just 15, he was the youngest player to win in the US Open main draw and was the youngest player to reach a professional tournament semi-final.

At the time he claimed victory at Roland Garros, Chang was only 17 years old and earned plaudits for his fourth-round win against Ivan Lendl.

Stan Smith boasts a victory each at Wimbledon and the US Open and later transitioned into coaching at the United States Tennis Association.

Although he could not find consistent success at the Grand Slam tournaments, he retired with an impressive winning record and many singles titles.

Many tennis icons and associations have ranked Smith among the greatest and he was even a past president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

It takes a special kind of tennis superstar to have an accolade named after them, and the ‘Serena Slam’ helps exemplify her success in the sport.

Serena Williams is one of just three women to complete a Career Grand Slam in a row - winning the US Open first then the remaining tennis majors.

She is also the only player - either male or female - to have claimed all four majors plus an Olympic gold medal in both singles and doubles.

Serena is widely regarded as the greatest women’s tennis player in history and established herself as one of the best-earning female stars ever.

Helen Wills

With 19 singles titles and a reputation for breaking the mold, Helen Wills was one of the standouts of tennis’ Amateur Era against England’s top players.

In her knee-length skirts and trademark white hat, the American star became a celebrity figure known for often competing against men to keep her skills sharp.

Her record of eight titles at Wimbledon stood until 1990 (a period of almost 60 years) when Martina Navratilova claimed a ninth title at the All England Club.

Boasting accuracy and power from the baseline, Wills has been rated among the greatest players of the 20th century, with the majors success to prove it.

Honourable mentions

Althea Gibson has a place in tennis history as the first African-American athlete to win a major, claiming the French Open title in 1956.

Billie Jean King once remarked that the successes of Arthur Ashe (and later the Williams sisters) were thanks to Gibson’s efforts.

The American icon followed her success at Roland Garros by winning the title at Wimbledon (1957,1958) and the US Open (1957, 1958).

Monica Seles might be one of tennis’ greatest what-if stories, seeming destined for unparalleled success with eight major titles as a teenager.

However, during the 1993 Citizen Cup in Hamburg, Germany, she was stabbed in the back by an obsessed fan of her rival Steffi Graf.

Although Seles was unable to recapture the same success in her return to the court after two years, she did win the ‘06 Australian Open.

Margaret Osborne duPont is widely regarded for her 21 doubles major championships, which overshadow her successes in singles.

The dominant American claimed 25 titles at the US Open (then known as the U.S. Championships) - a record which stands today.

Osborn duPont also went on to become one of the few women to claim a major trophy after childbirth, underscoring her grace and skill.

Coco Gauff

The top seeded female star from the US is Coco Gauff at position three, with expectations high that the 20-year-old will add to her sole major trophy.

Experts believe the 2025 French Open could be her next big chance.

Other American female stars who could add their names to majors history are Jessica Pegula (ranked 5), Madison Keys (ranked 6) and Emma Navarro (ranked 9).

On the men's side, Taylor Fritz is the highest-seeded US tennis player.

He was the losing finalist in the 2024 US Open and could be ready for the next step, with his compatriot Tommy Paul also a possibility as a ninth seed.
