In the world of professional basketball, size often plays a defining role, and the NBA has seen its fair share of towering athletes who could claim the title of tallest player in the NBA. Standing head and shoulders above their colleagues, these players have not only brought an imposing physical presence to the court but have also showcased exceptional skills that have made them legends in their own right. But who is the biggest in the NBA?  
Size doesn’t always matter, but in this case it does, as we look at who the tallest NBA players are of all-time, plus look at the tallest NBA players of 2023-24. 

Tallest NBA Players of All-Time

Gheorghe Muresan 7’ 7”

Tied for tallest in the NBA is Romanian-born Gheorghe Muresan, at 7 feet 7 inches tall, who had a 7 year NBA career. He played for the Washington Bullets (later known as the Wizards), then the Nets and became one of the league’s tallest and most recognisable players. Muresan’s towering presence in the paint made him a formidable opponent, and his career, albeit shortened by injuries, left a lasting impression on the league.

Manute Bol 7’ 7”

Another towering figure tied in NBA history for tallest player, was the Sudanese-born Manute Bol, who stood at a staggering 7 feet 7 inches. Bol was known not only for his extraordinary height but also for his shot-blocking prowess. He led the league in blocks during his career and became a defensive stalwart for several teams, showcasing that height wasn’t just about presence but also skill and strategy. Known for his humanitarian work, Bol was seriously injured in a 2004 car accident, and died in poverty in 2004, after giving his fortune away to charities in Sudan.

Yao Ming 7’ 6”

One cannot delve into discussions about the tallest NBA players without mentioning Yao Ming. Standing at an incredible 7 feet 6 inches, Yao, a Chinese basketball prodigy, dominated the league during his tenure with the Houston Rockets. His exceptional height, coupled with his remarkable agility and skill, made him a force to be reckoned with on the court. Yao's impact transcended the game, significantly popularising basketball in China and cementing his status as a global icon. Yao will forever be known as the face and height of Chinese basketball

Shawn Bradley 7’ 6”

Another tall import on the list of tallest players in the NBA, was 7 feet 6 inch tall, Shawn Bradley.  An army brat who was born in Germany, who moved back to America to kick start his career. Known for his shot-blocking abilities and defensive prowess, Bradley enjoyed a lengthy career in the NBA, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, and Dallas Mavericks. His height and wingspan made him a formidable obstacle for opponents driving to the basket. Bradley was struck by a vehicle while on his bicycle in 2021, and continues to rehabilitate from his injuries.

Tacko Fall 7’ 6”

A more recent addition to the list of towering NBA players is Tacko Fall from Senegal.  
Standing at 7 feet 6 inches, and over 300 pounds, Fall’s remarkable height, combined with his dedication and hard work, earned him a spot on the Boston Celtics’ roster. Despite being a rookie, Fall quickly became a fan favourite, captivating audiences with his immense size and glimpses of potential on the court. Sadly Fall was cut by the Cavaliers in 2022, and moved to China to restart his career.

The NBA is a global game, which is why our list of tallest NBA players ever has such a diverse set of names. When looking at who is the tallest player in the NBA today, it’s again a foreign affair, as we have a tie! That’s right there’s not just one tallest player in the NBA 2023, there are two. They’re both from Europe, and are both at very different stages of their career, but the one thing they do share is being the tallest in the NBA today. 
 

Boban Marjanovic 7’4”

Serbian veteran Boban Marjanovic is tied for being the tallest player in the NBA, and has been since his 2016 career began. This centre for the Houston Rockets is hot off the tip, and is keen to lean his big body into the play. At 35 years old, Boban is starting to see the end of his career, and what a one it has been for an undrafted free agent.

Victor Wembanyama 7’4”

French superstar Victor Wembanyama was only born in 2004, and yet this youngster has quickly lived up to his NBA hype. Also coming in at 7’4”, Victor has impressed in his 2023 debut, and has displayed a fantastic speed to go along with his impressive height. 
 

Challenges and Advantages

You might be one of the tallest players in the NBA, but does that mean you’re one of the best players in the NBA? While towering height provides certain advantages on the basketball court, it also presents unique challenges. These players often face greater strain on their bodies, leading to an increased risk of injuries. Additionally, they must adapt their playing style to leverage their height effectively without compromising agility or speed.
There is also the fact that the big guys are constantly being bumped by smaller, tougher guys, and that can take a toll on the body.

From dunking the ball without jumping to altering opponents' shots with ease, these tallest NBA players have showcased unparalleled skills, proving that height, when coupled with talent and hard work, can leave an indelible mark on the sport.

With humans continually getting bigger, it seems only likely that the tallest NBA player is yet to come. With huge new talent like Victor Wenbanyama, it seems likely that the question of ‘who is the tallest NBA player of all time?’ will be an ongoing question.
